to last post about try not teach yourself anything it never works. It works if you the basics down i feel if you have basics you can make most thinks work. how do you think the the people who started matials 100 years got started it had to be self taught some how. I agree with naz find books i think videos are your best bet and when you buy videos research them i like to call up the people who has the video and talk to the personally i think you can get alot more by talking to someone then by reading the reviews a person tone of voice and the way they potray themselves is usally what you will get out of the video if they all about me me me i wouldnt recomend a that person sorry for the long spill.
1- follow Naz's advice a run the risk of a real JKDist
coming along and smacking the sh-t out of you for disrespecting the honor of our Si-Gung.
2- find a certified instructor be it "JKD concepts"
or "OKJD" and be prepared to spend several years to
learn the real thing. Do some research, check the lineage
and figure out who can honestly pass the knowledge down
to you.
Alot of people find it offenseive when you try to teach yourself a style, and call your self a jkdist, or matial artist without stepping into a school.
The person that said self teaching was a good idea cuz the masters had to invent the art. People today hardly have the know how and the expereince to do so today.
HEY NAZ how have you been going!!! nah mate i dont have msn anymore i have to go on the net via school .....but if you send me stuff through to my friends email ( the one shown ) i will get your email i have bought myself acouple of books about bruce lee ... about 4 i love them but i want some more info hey especially on the moves can you send me some info on them???

p.s i recieved my black belt in tkd now i have quit so i can go further in jkd later
You can learn alot of stuff yourself. It is handy to have a teacher but sometimes these guys can make you worse than you were. I remember when I first started martial arts, after the second year of training I was worse a fighter than I was when I started. I had taught myself how to fight based on real life experiences, to a degree higher than the wing chun and shoalin class I later went to.
Luckily I found someone who helped me see my misunderstanding, and after a few year of his tutilage I am teaching myself with a little help from my friends. Thus I would suggest that self teaching be at least accompanied by friends who can help add reaslism to your training. Train diligently read vivaciously. I know you have a couple of BL books, they are indeed a very good start for the begginer. I would also recommend the "book of five rings" By Myamoto Mushashi (as translated by Thomas Cleary) and any books or tapes (these are better) of Alan Watts to help expand your mind. The latter is not a martial artist but is useful in understanding certain philosophical concepts in martial arts.
Ok, maybe i was a little harsh but I would recommend
,if you can find a dedicated training partner, the use of some videos.
Dan Inosanto has a 4 tape series on JeetKuneDo that teaches you the base of what Bruce Lee's curriculum was
when he ws teching. These will give you solid base to
start with. If you go over the drills with partner on regular basis.
Paul Vunak has several tapes too that are very good.
Sifu Lamarr Davis as well (although I havent seen his tapes) is very well respected too.
I have videos with steve grody i have his trapping tapes, Sectoring tape, And all three of his empty hand kali tapes i think he his very good instructor he is one of the few tapes that i have seen without the attitude of look what i can do rather he is one that you can follow along and really understand the progression he is making. I have alot of exp. in my other art so that really help me with the tapes but i think the way he teaches on the tapes you could follow right along.

Even some of those "Self Defense" schools of thought look very interesting. Sometimes, you will find that these "Self Defense" clubs are actually JKD clubs, but the owner chose not to follow Bruce Lee's "system", completely. There are many different martial arts "Styles", but what it boils down to is the Instructor and the Students. If you feel like you’re in an environment that you can excel in, then stick to it. Martial arts isn’t just about styles, it's relating to your environment and to others... if you don't think you want that, then you might as well just learn Jeet Kune Do, at home.
If you are bent on learning Jeet Kune Do, and there are no qualified instructors... then you should go to a JKD Seminar. You may have to travel a few hundred miles, but it would be a fun weekend. Check out a Ted Wong (___Fill in your favorite teachers name here) Seminar and train everything he teaches, until the next seminar. You would become very good at the few techniques the instruct teaches you because you will practice about 4-5 techniques for about 6 months, before he teaches you something else. After a year or so, you should visit local boxing clubs or community centers and find sparring partners.
