Remember in the beginning of the movie Enter the Dragon he is in the officer watching the movie of the guys at the island he was supposed to go and fight like HAN and the crew? he says...." why not just pull out a .45 and bang! they are all dead that will take care of them all" remember his statement like that? he obviosly was no stranger to the use of firearms....
Bruce Lee felt that the mind and the body were the best weapons! If you can use your body well enough, a weapon in your hand simply becomes and extension of your body! Hand held martial arts weapons looked great on film, but served no real practical purpose, as you can get in trouble for carrying such weapons on your person anyway! I personally train with many weapons (outside of my JKD curriculum of course) for the simple reason that I do bodyguard and private security work. Such weapons are allowed on your person for those occasions where you are protecting someone on their private property, and often necessary due to others carrying weapons! Remember, unfortunately criminals have nothing to lose, so carrying weapons is an everyday occurrence for them!

As most M/a gear towards self defence. In a unarmed situation. Then a armed point aginst armed attackers. The main goal being you have your body tools with you at all times. weapons are not at hand at every moment. And they are just an extinsion of your hand and arm skill. JKD is geared towards Natural defence tools. Whole body tools. You can not just train weapons .And be a good fighter. Just think when was the last time you saw anybody .Walking down the street with a sword large knife kali sticks baseball bat ect. They have to be cocealed put up not readly there at most times. Sure a hand gun can be there. But do you really want to shoot some one. If they are not planning to kill you. NO And as a fact most hand weapons are out dated .Due to the hand guns. They kill at a distance. So JKD is a modern art And its up to you if you want other weapon skills.

In hong kong bruce use knife (hidden of course) and a chain. Most courses do not mention weapons because (Bruce) held back on certain things. He taught only certain attributes for certain persons. Wong shun leung (honk kong street fighter) ving sun? Same original bruce lee teacher in kong kong. Yip man Ki....someone at sixteen in hongkong. Butterfly knives, long pole, are part of wing chun (Yip man.) Wong shun leung senior teacher of bruce lee. The answer is that bruce only taught (pieces of JKD) and did not completely (no video, seminars, but private students.) After bruce died people just did what they were taught, JKD was beginning there were only 12 people in the world who knew some JKD. Apart from Bruce Lee of course.

I don't really find the need to train weaponry. I train to defend against it yes, but I don't really train actually using it myself. I don't see the point. It's no different than using your arm if you were unarmed.

i dont know why BL never taught weaopons in his classes. Personally I concentrate on my unarmed techniques as I feel I should master myself before I master weopons. However I do still practice with weopons, traditional, conventional and non conventional. This is partly for the enjoyment factor partly because they can provide a refreshing workout but also because someday I might actually need to use a weopon and if I have no idea about weopons than I will not be as effective. Also I believe that if you want to be effective at defending you must be proficient at attacking.
