Ok so I came here for some advice on what matial art to take. So far I've been taking kickboxing for about... 3 months in order to get a more basic understanding of fighting and to get in better shape. I really like it but after awhile I also want to start taking something else and I'm not really sure which one would be best. I haven't heard of many people that give classes where I live but the few that I have heard of interest me. There's Jeet Kune Do, Kung Fu praying mantis, Wing Chun Kali, Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Ka Ju Kem Bo(SP?). I think there's also Judo but I'm not sure, and I don't have much knowledge on martial arts. So I was doing some research on Jeet Kune Do, and others, and came upon this forum and decided to ask if any of you could give me some info. So far I'm really interested in Jeet Kune Do but I'm not sure. Thanks for any help

Hello!

By all means take Jeet Kune Do! Especially if it is of the "original" variety. In other words, what Bruce Lee actually taught. It is by far the best method of self defense that I have ever encountered in all of my thirty-seven years in the martial arts! If there was something better, I would be doing it!

What Martial Art should YOU take?

Mr. X

I would suggest that you do some research a little bit deeper and don't take someone elses word for what you should participate within. I've taken Jeet Kune Do and some of the latter systems you mentioned. Many were good others were not as good. I think what your looking for is only going to come to you once you figure out what it is your wanting to learn martial arts for? But if your wanting opinions, I would suggest looking deeply into some Filipino arts, and reality based type systems. Anymore JKD has become so systemized and based around a structure that which it has taken the truth out of Jeet Kune Do. For one that is searching for JEET KUNE DO I don't think finding it is a problem, but finding competent jkd sifus may be another matter. There are many traditional arts that are based on combat and reality as well. It all depends on what your looking for. I get kind of stand-off-ish to those who say they studied every bruce lee movie and learnt how to fight from his movies and books. It actually cracks me up because if you actually watch Bruce Lee fight in his movies he has absoultly no martial application its just brawling. In fact it's almost redundant to the fact that it's all coreagraphed anyway so that it seems as if he really beat this guy up in 1.4 seconds flat. Bruce on Film was NOT the same as Bruce in reality. Noone on film is the same way. I was watching a movie I beleive it was fist of fury the other night and although I seen it many years ago, I obviously was a child when I last seen it, that the other night as an adult I couldn't help but laugh at his acting skills and his fighting ability he portrayed. He was a lousy fighter in that movie, and it would embarass me to think anyone would consider themselves a follower of someone with such poor fighting ability that he portrayed in his films. Sorry all you Bruce Lee Yokes but its the truth. Lets just face the facts the guy was horrible. His ideas were great, and his physical ability was par but i don't think today he would stand a second in a real fight against martial artist of today.
