why do you advertise on the internet, or anywhere else for that matter, this is just my view, and it may not be yours, but i would have thought someone like you would think the same way-
if you have reached the stage in life, or in jkd, where you really ARE enlightened, and do see what life is about, why do you advertise the sale or 'special' videos?
i mean, surely that's not expressing yourself?
to me, expressing myself is about having an open mind, even if it means considering the possibility that having an open mind is wrong. it's about expressing myself, and constantly learning from life, learning the lessons and striving to become wiser, while understanding that i am what i am. expressing yourself, for me, gives me hightened emotions, powerful feelings, and incredible experiences, that i know are bigger than life itself. having curiocity about everything, and not ever getting into a fixed pattern or routine of life, be it a daily routine to the shops, the routine of working the same way and in the same environment forever, or having the same FEELINGS, feelings are key to expression. expressing yourself is about not being arrogent enough to believe that you are right about something, however confident you may feel, and being adventurous and brave enough to find the causes for all your ignorance, it's about confronting your inner demons, and when they are vanquished, exploring the space they have left behind, constantly moving up the never ending stairway of life, and at the same time being humble enough to realise that it is all a gift, every single bit of it, good or bad.
and i may be wrong, i probably am wrong, but i do not see all of those above qualities in you.
now do not think i am questioning your 'authority' or that i am younger than you so therefore i know less, because we are all human beings, we all exist, and we all have the same rights, given to us, and sustained by the laws of nature. so human to human, i'm just asking, how do you express yourself? can you express yourself to me, as i have done to you?

What good does it do to put many hours into the production of instructional tapes if no one knows about them? What good does it do to have a sale on the tapes if no one knows there is a sale going on? what good does it do to spend most of your life learning a martial art if you do not share that knowledge with others? What business is it of yours what I do and how I go about doing it? Until you are making a living as a Jeet Kune Do instructor and have all of the financial responsibilities of an adult and parent, you really don't know how it is, so go and find someone else to question! Sorry to be so blunt, but I live in the real world, I have real bills to pay and I have a real life! That's exactly what is REAL!

the real world IS nothing more than you want it to be. the thing is, people don't have to pay bills, people don't even have to live in the real world, and if u can't undrestand that then thats fine, you're not ready to. but eventually we will all find the cause of our ignorance.

and i don't know about parenting or paying bills, just as you don't know what TRUE pain is. parenting is brilliant, i love my mother more than anyone i could ever know. bills are traps that life and society has laid out for us. you may think its mature to pay bills and live in the real society, but you have to understand that society isn't the truth, it's a limitation. quoting another person who was on the right lines-

Say what you will, as it doesn't bother me. What does bother me is that you act as if you know so much, yet your words prove that you know so little. For instance, you say that I don't know pain. Well, I have probably experienced more real pain than you will go through in your whole life, both mentally and physically! You don't have the slightest clue what I have been through, as you do not personally know me.
And no, bills don't absolutely have to be paid, but we'll see how long you last without paying them! Without power, the computer you are using to post these messages won't even come on! Without paying the phone bill, you can't do anything with it even if the power is on! Without house payments or rent payments, you don't have anywhere to put the computer in the first place! When someone just stops paying their bills, they find out what the phrase "freeze to death in the dark" means! It is your responsibilty to pay bills, and if you don't, what kind of example are you setting for others? Too many people are basically lazy asses these days, and have no clue what it is like to really work hard to make it in today's world. Sure, you can go out and join the "street people" and become a nasty, rotten-smelling pathetic loser with no life and nothing to show but ragged clothes and skid-marked undies! Hey, you could stand on the side of the road with a sign that says "Will Chi Sao For Food!". Hey, then someone gets a new refrigerator and leaves the box out by the road! What an opportunity here! You can add another bedroom onto your carboard estate over under the interstate bridge! Wow, wouldn't you be so "liberated" then? No thank you, not the life I want to live!
The bottom line is this: You either live up to your responsibilities as an adult and a parent, or you go under fast and hard! You'd better wake up and get over this "teenage philosopher" phase you are going through and join the real world. If not, I am afraid you are going nowhere fast! And by the way, I'm not coming down hard on you here, just trying to hopefully get you to think about some things!
He's still riding on his mother's coattails. I may be doing the same thing but I wouldn't go as far as to say in this society we don't need to pay the bills. Jowan, apparently you haven't paid much attention in history class, particularly a lecture regarding how capitalism and the economy work; I'll leave it at that. Besides, there are still many on this board that may still have interest in JKD. Lamar is just offering a means for these people to learn about JKD more in depth. Besides, you can't learn a lot about JKD by simply browsing internet forums.
oh yeah make sure you head off to man-magazine.com it has tim tackett's video interview. Enlightening and it has a comedic moment. Best of all (for those people that tend to hate advertisers) it's free.

When you say that you have to allow several weeks for allowance of duplication etc.....I would like to know what type of unit are you using to record these videos w/? Just a regular VCR to VCR or a more sophisticated device? Why do I ask? mainly because for the price your asking it seems like just simply duplicated videos are not worth the $ your asking... I have videos that I have dubbed from people and several years later they are not such great quality and although I miss the fact that I cannot view them, it upsets me that they just don't last. I no longer purchase VHS anything. If im going to spend any $ its gonna be on DVD format. Unless you are thinking of going that route Im not going to be too interested in your offer. Not that I have actually thought about it anyway. Im personally not a big fan of Jeet Kune Do to the extent of studying it. I have gotten many a martial art video through many different resources and I have never paid money for any of them. Usually by trading them w/ others or even the public library etc...and out of well around approx. 80+ so called training videos one thing i find is they are "boring", not so well put together, poor quality (audio, visual etc) and some of these were just like you mentioned an hour to an hour half/ some are full lenght taped at half speed so 6 hours long and if were to ever have paid my hard earned money for them I would of been upset. I have to admit out of all my tapes I have the only ones that I watch on a consistent basis that I learn from are George Dillman, and some of Remy Presas videos. I have tapes that range from and not limited to: Kali, Silat, JKD, Kung Fu, Police Tactics, BJJ, Boxing, Wrestling, Ninjutsu, Okinawan Karate, Chin Na, Dim Mak, chinese boxing, Wing Chun, and others are seminar type recordings (which are by far some of the better feeds) it is just my observation by some of these being "BIG NAME" instructors how disapointing they are for the price they are asking. I for one am a hard working individual who works a real job for a living and does MA part time as a hobby and enjoys learning what I do. However, it is to my knowledge that many people act like they have to be compensated immensly for their training etc... I think that is utter BS because as its known many don't pay for lessons and those that do are either of the more wealthier of those than those that have better things to do w/ their money. So it has been on my mind for a long time to ask these questons and I've never been able to ask them so you just so happend to be the first to put themselves in the position for this to be asked. And if you blaze on my for asking so be it. My heartfelt response and reasoning still stands firm regardless. Martial Arts should not be someones sole desire to burn a whole in their life and pockets. I think that is something that the Americans have just taken so they can make a fortune off of. And it just isnt'right. Im sorry. Even my instructor charges but his fees are reasonable far more so then what he has had to pay......

firstly, i'd like to say how upset i was that you called me a teenage philosopher, as you are stereotyping from past experience, i presume. i do not know you so i cannot judge, but you do not know me, so please refrain from the insults.

my old best friend nearly went out on the street, not out of choice mind, and i have known people with the life you say. and personally, i don't believe they are rotten smelling pathetic losers, personally i think they either need help, or should be respected for their life. because however you live, you are still a person. it's the same with other 'cultures', they are different, but who are we to judge?
if you want to mock people who live differently then be my guest, you are free to your own opinion, and i respect it, because at least you are expressing how you feel, but stereotyping and discrimination, against anything or anyone, no matter what they do, is not the way forward.
i am always open to new ideas and opportunities, and seek out ways to challenge my beliefs, which constantly change. and even though i'm a teenager, i would never insult people with no home.
i don't think you understood what i said about comfort- it is an indulgance that clouds our mind. with pain, you know where you are, and i'm sure you've had near death experiences, and if you did, then like me, you will know that in the instant you think its all over, you would be glad to live in a cardboard box, with all your loved ones, as long as we are together, it doesn't matter what our situation is. that's how i feel permanently, and it's hard to convey to others. you will understand that in those moments when you think it's all over, you will be glad of the time spent with your loved ones, no matter where it was, and would be happy to spend eternity with them in the shabbiest cardboard box ever.
i know that people have to pay bills in this osciety to live, but what im saying is that i'd rather die than be trapped for all of my life.
im gonna ask you bluntly- what do you think life's about?
a) paying bills
b) living in society
c) connecting with other living being, feeling emotions that are bigger than yourself, experiencing and discovering new ideas and situations that will challenge your mind and change the way you think.
personally i would rather feel some of the feelings that i feel than live in a society that dulls and traps, it may appear good, but it could easily be the devil making light of true evil.
if you want to see how i feel- then watch the film Equilibrium, about a society that doesn't allow emotions, because they ultimately cause wars and battle.
well, that's how i feel, trapped in a world that allows you to feel, but forces you over time to dispair and give up your emotions and feelings for a well paid job and a mortgage.
just to share something, i was taught at home for 5 years of my life as a child, after having a bad time at the first 3 years of primary school, and it liberated me, i felt free, and when i went back to school at age 14, i looked at the other kids, and saw that they were all trapped, they were living the life they had been told to live, and wouldn't take that step towards breaking free, because they were scared of the emotion. i feel that's how a lot of us are.
anyway Lamar, i started this thread with curiosity, and i didn't mean it to be offensive, i like everybody on the earth, no matter what they've done, and i do feel bad that you felt i was interfering. but now i've expressed what i feel to you, it's ok. and i hope you can do the same, but if not, then that's life.

Hello!
My intention was not to make fun of anyone, but to hopefully drive home a point that needed to be made! You must make money to survive in today's world! If you were offended by my bluntness, then I certainly apologize! As I said at the end of my earlier post, that was not my intention!
You know, I feel for all of the people in this world that are suffering in any way, as well as those who are homeless and lack guidance. I am always giving money to people on the sidewalk that look as if they need to eat. Some of my friends act shocked, saying that they are probably just going to use that money to buy booze with! I always tell them that what they do with the money is up to them, but at least I know in my heart that I tried to help in some way. If they didn't do what they said they were going to do with the money, that's not my fault, and I will not be the on that has to answer for that!
One thing that my daughter does (that I finance, by the way) is make several gallons of spaghetti with meat sauce and several gallons of tea and take it down to the Southside of Birmingham on weekend afternoons. She sets up a table and has cups, paper plates and plastic forks. She stays there, allowing the homeless people to eat all they want until it is all gone. That is the kind of person that I am, and the kind of person my daughter is.
I have a most important rule in life, which is FAMILY COMES FIRST! I would do anything within my power for anyone in my family at a moment's notice. You only have one REAL family, and they should mean the world to you! I am always doing things for my parents and my daughter, and I do it willingly and gladly without hesitation. I hope you understand me a little better now!
Alright Jowan it's one thing to share your views, it's another to impose it. I believe that you're performing the latter here (You do know what that means right?). Just great taking advice from a drop out.

Jowan, just because it was Bruce's legacy that he left us that the individual is the temple, it really doesn't mean that everyone who takes JKD is going to further explore what that means. Some see JKD as an art, a martial art- a means to take apart people in seconds, and there it stops. Some see martial arts as a whole to further improve your way of life.
Keep asking those seeking questions and ignore those don't like it, the cardboard boxes they live in are far to delicate.

Jowan asked a simple question, I believe he has his answer. Some people need a lot more than they have, because they can't see that what they have is ample. This is highlighted by Lamars comment about spending so long in martial arts and sharing knowledge line. We are supposed to be greatful that he is sharing his knowledge in the form of these instructional tapes at $20 each. If peopl ewant to buy them, then fine but personally I couldn't be more greatful than if he would just take the time to answer a few questions on this forum. This is the gift of giving. The problem? It doesn't pay.

are you assuming things damien? Are you assuming that Lamar doesn't answer that many posts or he hasn't as of late is because they don't pay? The fact is there are things in JKD that can be better explained by seeing and feeling; not just relying on some long posts even though some of bruce's students take time to answer questions they'll always say it's best that you personally witness the explanation in a see / feel manner. Or better yet, why cater to the armchair practitioners and charlatans out there? why make their bookquest feel so secure? Why should i spend all my hours honing what I've been taught? So that people out there that read the books and think they have a handle on the subject topic could rob me of my hard work? sorry pal, that doesn't jive with me.
OH yeah, before I forget you have to know that this site is headed by a couple of students of his and those that frequent this board are students of his also. although lately it seems that this number has been dwindling.

I have always taken time to answer any question that I feel I can contribute to, often with a very long and in-depth answer! I have no problem with this, as it has never been about money for me, but instead the quest for knowledge and the willingness to share knowledge gained! When I have a sale on my tapes, it is often because I am trying to come up with some funds to further my martial arts education in some way, or someone in my family is in need of my assistance financially. In this case it is both!
As Lester so well stated already, this forum is owned by my students (this is why it says Web Kwoon Group by my name), and several other students of mine often post here. The reason that you don't see me on here that much is that the questions on this forum often have absolutely NOTHING to do with Jeet Kune Do. This IS a Jeet Kune Do forum, and in my opinion, too much other than Jeet Kune Do is allowed to be discussed on here! I have devoted my entire life to an exhaustive study of Bruce Lee and his teaching, training and fighting methods. If a question has nothing to do with Jeet Kune Do, you probably will not see a comment on it from me! It's just that simple!

And without wishing to offend you though, if you see that there is not a lot of questions regarding JKD on here, why do you feel the need to plug your sale. The two should go hand-in-hand, unless of course you don't mind people thinking that it's all a bit exploitative. In truth I understand that you may have learned JKD for a great number of years and would have a great deal of advice to offer regarding this, but in reality there are far more questions on here about training, flexibilty etc, etc, than in how to move my hand when I punch? Or where your feet should be. The message in JKD goes a lot deeper than that, which I belive was where Jowans question was directed at.

and Lamar, thank you for your time in talking to me, i do feel i know you a little better, and i am glad to find you share the same principles i follow- family come first!! in the end, family is more important than any kind of armchair philosophy or ways of living your life, because ultimately life is about people, not what they do! and i accept that i come from my ancestors, and i am humble to their lives and their ancestor's lives before them, and i am sorry if i forced my views on you, views are an individual's opinion, and whatever happens you should never tell someone they are wrong, because ultimately we just do not know! and i merely wished to share my opinion with you, and i thank you for doing the same for me.

YOU didn't get all of the emails and phone calls from the people saying that they missed the sale before and wished they could have gotten in on it! I am trying to give them a chance!
As for the answering of questions, I am a very busy person! I try to answer specific questions where I can truly be of assistance to someone regarding Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do. Outside of that, I'm sorry, but I just don't have time to discuss whether Mike Tyson could beat Bruce Lee or whether Jet Li's movies are as good as Bruce Lee's movies.
Also, I don't do the philosophy thing. I could care less what Krishnamurti had to say about anything! I am a Christian, and I don't care for such things. When you start mixing religion with martial arts you are bordering on cultism, so I keep religion out of it. I just try to be the best person that I can be. If I can be helpful to someone, I will take the time to do so. Otherwise, I don't get involved!
I don't see where the difficulty in understanding this lies, as it all seems very simple to me! I would think that a sale would be appreciated. You don't see my students that own this site complaining about me promoting the sale on here! It sounds like some people just don't have anything else to do but gripe and complain, and are looking for any excuse to do so! If you don't like what I am doing, just stay out of it! It doesn't concern you!
Okay you have moved me to say something because you two have not said or asked anything that is new nor has it been original. When I first signed on to this forum I knew that it was ran by Sifu Davis's students. Which implies that there would be subjects that would be written by him for his students and anyone else intrested. So if you are not intrested in the sale then that is fine but you shouldn't try to critisize a man trying to give more for less to his students and followers. You must understand that he has students that can not study with him because they live out of state, country or whatever the case maybe. Again, I can't stress enough that this forum is ran by Sifu Davis's students and in reality you are a guest here. So try to be a little more respectful to the sifu of the people who run the forum. That doesn't mean you can't say your oppinion or be blunt on here it just means be more tactful with your words.

I have a job but I also have all those bills that Sifu Davis was talking about. I would have definately jumped at the chance to pick up a few of the videos if it weren't for the expenses that I have to pay first. I don't ordinarily visit Sifu Davis' websites so these threads are the only way that I can know when these sales are taking place. So they're meant for people like me who are interested in the information. Hopefully I will be able to take advantage of the next sale by Sifu Davis. Anyone else who are not interested in the sale can just choose not to reply to these threads. It's that simple.
I'm NOT getting into the "to advertise or not to advertise" debate because I think that's pretty pointless. Some people are interested in buy tapes from Lamar and will read such threads. Others aren't and will read threads about chi or what trouble Mike Descado got into over the weekend. I really don't care.
I do want to respond to the question about the quality of Lamar's tapes over the years. I've had some of his tapes for at least 7 years and I haven't noticed any degredation of the quality. Anyway I'm not sure how much tape duplication quality has to do with using a "duplication machine" as it is with the quality of the tape and the speed at which the duplication is done. I don't know, I'll let an expert answer that. But after 7 years the tapes are still fine.

I wondered alot about the same questions Jowan asked Lamar
But Lamar is one of the better Teachers of JKD and I have heard nothing but good stuff about his magazines and videos ect.
I would like to purchase some of them in the future
he seems like one of the best that JKD has to offer and as far as him making bucks off of it, good for him , although I personally have fought with the idea of making lots of money on my art.

First of all, shut the f u c k up, nwfish. Your endorsement of Lamar is a literal death sentence to his rep since you suck truckloads of ass.
Second of all, Lamar is trying to make a living doing what he loves. I don't believe for one second that he's on a mission to bring the light of JKD to the world. Not hardly, he's a business man with a family to feed... that's it, and that's all.
Is he plugging his tapes to sell them? (i.e. to make money?) Uh, YEAH?!? I mean, duh! If I could make money teaching martial arts, I would. Lamar has my dream job, so how the hell could any of you jerkoff's question him for promoting his tapes?
Yeah, it's shameless and a little too "used car salesman" for my tastes, but so what? Do you guys go to YOUR jobs everyday because of some higher and/or altruistic purpose? Or do you go to make money?
I go to make money, because I enjoy being able to buy s h i t like FOOD and stuff.

Jowan, the way you talk it seems as if you study some zen philosiphy and are trying to teach it. It is in my understanding (and I may be wrong about the zen philosiphy part) that only a zen master should bestow his understanding, and I would believe to think that a zen master would rather sit quietly aside and let a person dectate to himself what he is to do with his life and time.
I do not believe you should be questioning this man but rather yourself as to why you had to post to his forum. Everyone has to make his own way in life because no one else can live life for you and so you have to do what you do to survive. Myself, I don't not see his actions as an extension of greed, as it seems that you point out, but an action to spread his teachings and to provide for his family and himself. The fact is, not to distance yourself from society, but to try to be a part of it and influence it in the best possible way you can while taking care of what you have. Having input to something is good, but you should also relize when your input defeats itself. As the saying goes "A wise man speaks because he has something to say, a fool will speak because he has to say something".

there is no such thing as zen, for every moment and every thought of zen is different, and my philosophy wasn't zen, just an accumulation of my own thoughts, so i don't have to withhold the information.
