I may be interested in going to this little camp

July 24 2004, 9:06 PM

this says free to law enforcement: Define Law Enforcement. Is this just COPS persay or does Correctional Officers, Security Officers, Bouncers, Reserve PD, Jail Guards do they count too. We are all brothers in arms. Free is good I like free. And I'd like to see about Free lodgin if I come.. I'll be coming from Southern Ohio.

Police Officers

This was a stipulation set forth by the seminar host, but I was under the impression it was just for cops, although I'd imagine Auxillary officers would apply as well.

OH well

Whats the premise of this so called camp? Is this a technical camp or what is going to cover. Who is teaching it? Are their several instructors or just one? What are some of the training curriculum ideas that is set for this event? Does the Instructor(s) know exactly what will be covered? Im assuming since LEO are being asked to come this will be geared for a more law enforcement approach? Or are you just trying to get LEO to participate? Many LEO are not allowed to execute most of the martial applications that are taught within a MA studio. Im catching the vibe that this is like a MMA structured environment. W/ alot of grappling emphasis rather then technical adhersion. What form of stand up fighting will be approached? I see no structure or any real detail on who, what, how, just the where, and when.

Just some questions. I don't want to drive 4 or 5 hours to something I know nothing about.

Our "so called" camp

July 25 2004, 11:53 PM

"Whats the premise of this so called camp?

I am just curious as to why you would say "so called camp"?

"Is this a technical camp or what is going to cover. What are some of the training curriculum ideas that is set for this event?"

One of the main things we are out to convey is that JKD can be trained in an alive, resisting environment. We are out to show you how break away from many of the traditional drills and to create your own "alive" drill. I do know for a fact though that Dave (the host) wants to see some of the more traditional drills as well though.

Not to mention, we want to have fun. Not only at the event, but at other times as well. To kick back around a fire, maybe drink a beer or two, talk shop, get to know each other, and enjoy our time away from our otherwise hectic lives. I think there's even a shooting range, hot tub and live entertainment on Saturday night (not strippers,,, LOL).

"Who is teaching it? Are their several instructors or just one?"

I will be teaching all the stand up. Tyson Crowell may be teaching part of the ground portion if we have time.

"Does the Instructor(s) know exactly what will be covered?"

Of course.

"Im assuming since LEO are being asked to come this will be geared for a more law enforcement approach? Or are you just trying to get LEO to participate?"

No, I think some friends of the host are LEOs and he wants them to attend future camps.

"Many LEO are not allowed to execute most of the martial applications that are taught within a MA studio."

I'm fully aware of this (I've taught many police and correction officers here in Indianapolis). One thing they have all told me is that if it came down to it, they would certainly use the techniques they have learned.

"Im catching the vibe that this is like a MMA structured environment. W/ alot of grappling emphasis rather then technical adhersion."

Just the opposite so I don't know how you caught that vibe, I didn't throw it.

This is not a mixed martial arts seminar. With the exception of a small amount of ground fighting (BJJ) and clinch, it will be strictly JKD. However, you will take the things you learn and use them against a "live", resisting opponent. So I guess in a way you might say that the "environment" is MMA, however the "techniques" are JKD. We are NOT a JKD Concepts school.

"What form of stand up fighting will be approached?"

What we do for our stand up is primarily pure JKD (with the exception of SOME of the clinch work.

You will see everything from basic footwork drills, to trapping, to advanced strategy. You will learn about Bruce Lee's Mechanical advantages, as well as how to convert the things we learn from JKD to weapons. All of it is based on simplicity and directness!

Gonna stop there, because I can tell I am starting to ramble,,, LOL

"I see no structure or any real detail on who, what, how, just the where, and when."

All you had to do was follow the advice on the above post, and I could have sent you a flyer.

"Just some questions. I don't want to drive 4 or 5 hours to something I know nothing about."

I understand, I wouldn't either. I should have posted more info, but I was in a bit of a rush.

I tell ya what Tac D,,,, You drive out, and don't like it, and I will personally give your money back!

Again, please e-mail future questions to ghoyd@yahoo.com. You may also give me a call at (317) 545-1656. You're more than welcome to call and ask all the questions you want.

This forum tries to install adware on my PC from time to time, so I only stop by once a week or so. Someone else told me about your post, or I would have missed it.

Sounds like a great camp w/ good motivation

July 26 2004, 9:01 AM

Thank you so much Gary Hoyd for your time to convey all the questions I had. Sounds like a decent camp. I appologize if I came across somewhat bullish or errogant, I was just trying to relate and see what this was all about. Wasn't a whole lot of INFO on it.

Well, Im a full time Police Officer for Columbus PD. I may come to this. I have to sleep on it and make sure the wife will let me. I however know what she will say. But I'll try anyway.

Re: Great deal on a mini-camp in Shoals, Indiana

The camp was great. The lodge alone was extraordinary, three stories w/ four bathrooms and a state of the art kitchen. The host, Dave Marshall, even took us to his restaurant. I hear there will be more of these, so I definitely plan on attending.
