Okay, I really want to know something here, and to tell you the truth, I really don't know anything on this subject matter or anything about JKD. When I heard about Jeet Kune Do I became immediately interested, but I'm not sure I have a total grasp on the subject yet.

1) Does this martial arts style help in street fights?

I nearly got beat up the other day and I really want to know if this martial arts helps in self defence. I've had friends who told me they DID learn a certain type of martial arts but never actually used it properly in a fight. So, does it help at all?

2) Is this related at ALL to any of the martial arts styles in "Cowboy Bebop"?

I know it sounds stupid, getting ideas from a cartoon, but I asked around and people tell me the main character (Spike) uses Jeet Kune Do. Now I was suprised. He used moves that I would never think might be used in a martial arts style. One instance, Spike sidestepped up a guy charging him with a knife and flipped him over. Spike used many "dodging" and "manuevering" moves. So is it related?

3) [If not] what exactly do you learn?

Do you learn the basic punch and kick? Do you learn to relax? What? Give me the details, please.

4) Relaxing?

In Cowboy Bebop, Spike gave a small monologue during an episode where he talked about his body being totally "relaxed" so he could "move and be like water". What does this mean? Is this what you strive to learn in Jeet Kune Do?

So I BASICALLY want to know if this martial arts style is about "dodging" and "manuevering" and all that. It's hard to understand the situation but I hope someone can help me.

my only advice to you is get bruce lee's fighting method series. It may not have all, but it gives a general picture of what JKD is about.

Boy, oh Boy, oh Boy! Does this site just stink so much it attracts the young CHILDREN? I mean "cowboy bebop"? WTF man.

Look newbie. JKD just like any other martial art or fighting style or just plain old pumbling way of fighting is only as effective as the person learning it and the person teaching it too you.

You wanna learn to fight? Don't go searching for any one particular fighting element. The truth is the best way to learn to fight is as NIKE says " just do it" Dawn some Boxing gear (gloves, headgear)and get some people and just go at it. The more you fight the more you'll improve. Sure training always helps and in fact most "GREAT" fighters done just that they dawned the fighting apparel got in the zone and beat the hell out of a sparring partner. If one partner is no match work w/ him to get him to your level in the mean time find someone who you can't beat and study him till you can beat him. When you've beaten him move on to someone else. Your never going to be able to beat everyone. And if thats your ultimate goal your missing the big picture. Martial Arts is not only about combat or survival of the fittest it is an art form. You can't have Martial without the art! and vice versa. If you learn to just fight your just that a fighter. Without learning the art your merely studying inside the box. By only learning the art you are nothing more then a mere "dancer" or "artist" The both have to be combined in order to become a true MARTIAL ARTIST! So as boxing its an art form, Wrestling its an art form, Karate its an artform, Kung Fu its an art form, Sword fighting is an art form, Archery is an art form, Gun play is an art form, JKD is an art form its all artform as long as you are applying only the art side. Learn combat side and your now "martial form".
Learning to fight to keep from getting picked on or getting jumped starts with something more detramental than just learning to defend yourself. It starts within it starts in how you are precieved in how you conduct yourself, in how you carry your self and behave to others etc...Walking tall, standing firm, being confident, Learning to give as well as recieve. All this is about being less a target.

what the heck is 'cowboy bebop'???
It sounds super cool!!!!

In response, JKD is scientific street fighting.
Becoming agile and dodging is not massively encorperated.

Jeet Kune Do means "way of the intercepting fist", just to get you thinking!!!
Seriously, get those reccomended books, and then get a copy of the Tao of JKD.

have fun, and kick some buns!
