does anyone on this forum actually practice mma types of sparring? if you don't then you should consider it. many martial arts school merely practice in the stand-up range. this is unfortunate.
where i train, we transition from standing to clinching to ground n' pound and submissions.
if you don't spar this way; why not? the mma types of sparring are the most realistic and jkd is supposed to be about realism.

p.s. the boxing-blast (belfort style) is fantastic!
p.p.s. finger jabs and groin strikes are overrated. i have been attacked in those areas numerous times. those strikes never stopped me. i just became irate and beat those guys to the point of incapacitation.

Sparring

September 17 2004, 1:28 PM

Yes, I and my group do practice this form of sparring. We are a hard nose group of individuals who spar to fight. Our motto is if you don't walk away Bumped, bruised, broken, or bleeding at the end of class you didn't train hard enough. We spar in all the ranges. But our method is starting from stand up, sometimes w/ a weapon sometimes empty handed etc.. and work closing the range going to clinch or shootin, to grappling and go straight to the ground to gain a submission or just KO the guy into submition. We are a group that trains in the mindset everything we do is as real as we can make it. However we do still make it controlled to the point of as less injuries as possible. If we get a newbie or someone that is not comfortable w/ taking head shots then we "try" to control that area for their sake but we'll tear up the body. It upsets me the lack of conditioning many martial artist do not do. I was at a school not to long ago and I was asked to share some philosophies in training and I asked for us to put on some head gear and go a couple minutes of boxing. HAHA they didn't want to do it. They were afraid of getting hit in the head and face. It was sad. Who get into a contact training element and is afraid to hit in the face? Its amazing. Were a dying breed in my opinion the only way to learn to defend against getting hit is to have someone start hitting you in the face.... It don't have to be hard but just enough to tag you to let it be known... If you train to not hit in the face chances are you wont hit there in a fight...

So box hard, box long, and box rough! Kick em to stuff em! and Take em down to break em! If you aint getting hurt you aint training.

Thanks

I agree with what Master Tac said! Alot of my sparring colleagues are a little too cautious when it come to sparring, they too are afraid of getting hit in the head with all their sparring gear on. I find sparring to be an amazing activity to do, especially as i feel it helps condition the whole body. As for MMA style sparring, i have to admit, I don't do much grappling or submission, As my friends arent keen on the idea. however alot of my submission holds are wrestling and jujitsu influenced and i do get to practice them on actual people from time to time

sparring

I have sparred, full contact with mixed martial artists. I used mostly JFJKD techniques vs MMA stylists, but once in awhile, I would mix in some old Kickboxing techs. One thing I found, is that these orthadox fighters were a bit clumsy with thier feet when I would circle right (south paw). I also found that it was much harder for them to throw round house kicks while side stepping right. I'm not really a "grappler", so I found that the transition from stand up, to clinch, to ground was dangerous. I felt like I was going to hurt myself trying to stand up and wrestle. I usually used the grappling techs that I was being taught in that class, when I was on the ground... however, I saw many openings for groin attacks while in the gaurd, during sparring.

It's a good experience to sparr, full out, with Mix Martial Artists. I've learned a lot. I used to come home with some nasty rainbow coloured bruises all over my shins and forearms. ha! The Frank Shamrock clubs are hard-core!

Sparring to the extent of training

September 17 2004, 9:00 PM

Thats good guys sounds like your some of the few guys that get in there and pound the hell out of each other. Good times. Nothing wrong w/ that at all. In my own personal opinion if you can't take getting hit you should look for another form of fun on a weeknite. Because too many martial artist are pussies and can't take or dish out a good beating. I've lost alot of respect for much of the traditional arts except for the older Okinwan styles. I have seen so many so called black belts who has never even been hit all full out or even been in a fight. The fullest extent of thier contact in training is evolved from this Point sparring crap. I mentioned some Okinwana Karate Ryu system becuase I've been to some of those schools to train and to be honest they are some hard core fighter and they will dish out and take what you give them. My ultimate favorite is just Boxing and kickboxing. JKD would be on my top list but again alot of JKD is watered down these days they talk a good game but when you watch them they are no better than a 2nd rate Tae Kwon Do club they just slap on the JKD and bruce lee tag and they can't fight worth a snot either. I've seeen JKD guys get their rears kicked by Karate and TKD guys and to me that is just redundant becuase if the JKD guys were training like it was intended they would be able to walk through most Traditional stylist. But its a sad sad day in that realm.

I can't afford not to fight hard and train hard becuase if I weaken in training I'll be weak in the street and the street is my job and its where I make my living. As a LEO if you fail you die its that simple.

Good day!

LOL yeah I got my errogance honestly! I am really a nice guy I promise, I just tend to cut through all the BS.

Us "COPS" are so used to all the hard asses who claim they got this title, or that title, or kicked this guys ass while in prison or shot this person in the street and whatever. But I see how they act one on one w/ authority. Some people have a tendecy to put on this fasad that goes a bit deeper then they really are. Im quite sure there are alot of hard asses out there and by god i've crossed paths with many of them but to be truthful "Those that can will!, Those that can't won't!". Meaning if your a true bad ass in every sense of the word your not going to even going to go out of your way to put your ego on the line. If your one of the blow hards that i and most "Cops" encounter on a daily basis you get to know how to cut through the BS rather quickly.

Be well all...

This cops going to bed
