Lamar's tape series--Very Important Question/// for Lamar Davis

Hello Lamar

I know you have a huge tape series and I have a short question about them.

When you demonstrate a technique on tape are you punching and kicking as Bruce Lee threw his punches and kicks? This is hard question to ask because I know all our bodies are different so it might different when someone else does the same thing.

I ask this because of all the new interpretations of JKD that are out there. I know Bruce lee did not just throw a wing chun punch or a regular boxing punch. He had a special way of modification to his technique. So is it this modification
that you demonstrate according to all the first generation students you studied with or is it your way that you came up with
which is comfortable to you?

Maybe if you feel like it you could explain a little about how Bruce lee modified his punches and your demonstration of them on tape.

Thanks

Hi Lamar

I hope you did not miss this question or just think it was dumb. I asked it in all seriousness and was not being disrespectful,, just looking for an honest answer in respect to technique execution.

thanks

No Problem!

Hello Again!

There is no problem with your question, other than the fact that it is a little bit on the "broad" side of the spectrum! In other words, very generalized as opposed to specific! This is not really your fault though, as Bruce Lee threw his punches in different ways depending on the range and the desired result! Sometimes his punches looked more like the wing chun chung chuie, while other times they looked more like the boxer's jab or cross. The primary lead tools in Jeet Kune Do are the straight punch and the bil jee. The straight punch is normally thrown with a vertical or slightly diagonal fist (as opposed to the boxer's rotating horizontal fist punch). This allows the fighter to keep the lead elbow in and down, which is better for power transfer in the punch and defensive applications. In close, the punch is delivered like the wing chun chung chuie, while at longer ranges the shortened arc is used. This allows for maximum power transfer into and through the target. This is the Jeet Kune Do "one shot knockout" straight punch that will nearly take someone's head clean off!

To execute this punch, start off in a normal bai jong, or on guard, position with your power side forward. The lead hand is the first thing to move. Keeping the elbow in and down, drive the fist forward in a straight line to the target. Impact should be with a vertical fist, and the bottom three knuckles are the contact surface. As you go through the target, allow the fist to arc inward just slightly across the centerline. The fist does not stop until you are back in the bai jong position. This assures maximum power transfer into the strike, and imposes maximum damage on the opponent. This is the most famous Jeet Kune Do straight punch.

In all of my instructional DVDs, I make an effort to teach and demonstrate the material just as it was taught by Bruce Lee, and according to what my instructors say, I have done a good job of getting the important points across! I teach the material just as it was taught to me by the most prominent original Bruce Lee students that I have trained with! I hope this is helpful to you in some way, and I hope I have answered your question adequately! By the way, I would prefer that you aske these questions on MY forum! I am the Sifu to the guys that run this forum, but I also have several forums of my own!
