hmm, interesting comments. Im not quite sure what you mean by this statement: JKD TENDS TO FOCUS ON SILAT TRAPPING THEN GO TO GRAPPLING:

That is new news to me. The only Silat i've seen in JKD is from the JKDC group and its hardly Silat if you ask me.

Besides Silat Trapping, JKD Trapping, Wing Chun Trapping, Kali Trapping, its all trapping for the most part they all do the same thing and focus on the same ending. To close the gap and shoot to the clinch or as I've also been told its a "means to an end"! So Trapping is Trapping. If your proficient with any of these trapping systems then your on the boat in my opinion.

As for Grappling etc... Silat Harimau is the ground style from "tiger" and its pretty effective however not much being taught on it these days since Pak Suwanda passed. I mean its still out there but its kinda spread thin. The Gracie BJJ camp well of course they are gonna continue to strive as will the SBG group and the Machado Bros group etc... its all as effective as the person doing it these days.. One is really no better then the other as i see it.

I once heard that Pak Suwanda used his harrimau against a great BJJ grappler and beat him something terribly. So it's not which is better, to me its how good do you want to be?
And what is your goals with the learning?
It's your choice and you have to figure that out on your own.

my MSG has been edited so maybe now its a bit more clear.
but thanks for the insight.

And what is your goals with the learning?

My goal is to be more well rounded as a "fighter"
and if i was close enough to grapple with some one i would know what to do or how to take him down before him to me . also i know that jkd focuses more on striking thats why i would figure jkdg would help still find effective ways of striking the partner or being able to get back up from being taken down.
Also i read about many jkd practitioners taking bjj for their foundations as well but i dont hear much of jkders taking jkdg . probably because theres isnt many school teaching this i dunno.

Thanks for editing your post.

Here is something else im not familiar with or perhaps i've just missed somewhere along the way of my many years in the arts. But you mention this JKDG (grappling) like it's a seperate part of JKD? I know Bruce lee had some *minimal ground fighting in his base. However I would tend to say it was either silat or judo or even japanese jiujitsu. At that time BJJ was not found. JKDG is a new one to me. the closest that I can even think is say perhaps Larry Hartsell's Buno/Dumog but that is not really JKD it's more so Filipino grappling/groundfighting in the term or relations. When I hear all this JKDconcepts, JKDunlimeted, JKDGrappling, JKDtrapping, JKDXYZ etc... I always say one thing. ITS ALL JKD in the end...it is not a seperate category. Yes today many JKD'ers as you put them do cross train in BJJ and why wouldn't they? Imean it's very effective and it has made a great proving ground as for it's ability to hold water. Many great JKD players have found worth in BJJ.

I'll say this my good man, you need to focus on what YOU want out of your training.. if Ground fighting is what you want, then seek it out. Be it BJJ, Silat, Japanese JiuJitsu, Russian Sambo, Wrestling, Dumog, Buno, Etc...in the end they will all teach you how to survive when your but hits the pavement. What you really need to realize though is in a fight you must learn to fight your fight and not theirs...Make them fight your fight...otherwise your in for a rude awakening... If Im dead set on not going down... chances are Im not going down.. and if I do... im pretty sure I'll make it back to my feet. Im not indestructable by any means...but real life street fighting is a bit different then the cage fighting you see on TV. From a Law Enforcement standpoint I've only been tackled 1 time.. and I hit the ground and was back on my feet quicker then he knew what happend...

Thanks again..

JKD grappling is a fairly broad term. It means different things to differnt people and often includes BJJ. For some it is the thirty some odd grappling techniques shown in the tao of jeet kune do, for others it is Larry Hartsell's material from his early books. If I may ask, who are you taking it with? That may give me some indication of what he/she teaches as far as JKD grappling.
For me personally, I use a mix of JKD trapping, Thai and wrestling clinching, judo and submission wrestling takedowns and BJJ and submission wrestling ground work with a few odds and ends from Judo and Kali/Silat. In any case, I think that if you take the JKD grappling, which will probably have influence from BJJ or some analogue at least, you should take a look at it since it contains a wealth of information of ground grappling.
