Let's compare the platforms of the socialist and democratic parties. First look at the socialist platform and then look at the democratic platform.
2000-2001 Socialist Party USA Platform
PREAMBLE
The Socialist Party stands for the abolition of every form of domination and exploitation, whether based on social class, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, or other characteristics.
We are committed to the transformation of capitalism through the creation of a democratic socialist society. Socialism will establish a new social and economic order in which workers and consumers will take responsibility for and control of production, and residents will take responsibility for and control of their homes, schools, and local government.
For these reasons we call for social ownership and democratic control of productive resources, for a guarantee to all of the right to participate in societal production, and to a fair share of society's product, in accordance with individual needs.
As we pursue a socialist transformation of society, we join with others in demanding fundamental changes within the existing system. As we build the socialist movement, we organize around a platform committed to our common and interdependent struggles and aspirations.

The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Platform
Ongoing Platform
This portion of the platform embodies the beliefs and principles of
the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
Business and Community Development
We believe American business, properly encouraged and regulated, can bring economic prosperity to all, but if it does not, we believe government should take appropriate actions to bring about that prosperity.
We support:
• Reasonable regulations that encourage fair competition, ensure safety, environmental and labor standards, and prevent price discrimination.
• Community reinvestment to promote local business and home ownership.
• Small business development, especially ownership by members of economically-disadvantaged groups.
• Regulation of interstate businesses, especially banks, to prevent adverse effects on locally owned businesses and banks.
• Economic investment in troubled regions or industries.
• Responsible use of economic development funds.
• Businesses that build, employ and invest in the United States.
.........................................................................................................................................................................
Socialists want society to own the businesses, Democrats want to ensure that businesses act responsibly. Democrats are not calling on government to own businesses but rather to regulate them so that they treat people right. The scandal on Wallstreet is a good example of why government needs to regulate business. |
