SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS PROVINCE, RESOURCE RICH-YET SO POOR!
Southern Highlands Province (SHP) is endowed with vast number of natural resources ranging from the famed Petroleum Resources to the least known Pyrethrum potential. Other resources include minerals such as gold, coffee, rice, livestock and others. God blessed Southern Highlands in a very special way. Above all is the diversified human resources with multicultural background. The beautiful Ialibus, the soft spoken Pangias, the outspoken kaguas, the moderate Eraves, the silent Kutubus, the authoritative Nipas, the complacent Mendis, Deprived Lai Vallians, the Margarima, Komo, Tari, Koroba, Kopiago and the almost forgotten peace loving Bosavis. The Bosavis, though not popular, are some of the beautiful people of the province. Sons and daughters of Souths, be proud of yourselves because you are a Southern Highlander. Yes, Iam a proud Southern Highlander. Southern Highlands is currently the engine driving the PNG economy. The earnings from the resources development are obvious and no body should deny this fact. Besides the natural resources are hardworking Southern Highlanders in the Public and Private sectors. Southern Highlanders have some of the best doctors, lawyers, scientists, accountants and you may join the list. We do not forget those Southern Highlanders working in the plantations and serving in the construction industry. I am a proud Southern Highlander because none of those high profile investigations and inquiries such as the NPF etc include any Southern Highlander. Political landscape however has been one of the worst in history. Greed styled leadership has been an impediment for socioeconomic development. Infrastucture development has been nill over the last ten years apart from the Agiru centre. Since Sir Wiwa Korowi vacated the seat allowing for a bye election, situations deteriorated. The Late Mune administration introduced the Nipa-born claims. Agiru followed in the paths of corruption which resulted in him being humbled by a Leadership Tribunal. Ariru was dismissed from holding public office for at least three years. The dismissal came after some three years of court battle that concluded at the eve of the 2002 National Elections. The 2002 election was also a failure. Nipa Hami Yawari was crowned the governorship after the 2003 Supplementary elections. It is claimed he is the successor of the late Dick Mune. The scenario now is different with serious allegations and rumours that approximately 95% of the PEC meetings were held in the five star hotels of Port Moresby, Madang and Mt Hagen. The question one would ask is "What is wrong with Mendi?" Corruption seems incurable in the Southern Highlands Provincial Administration. Interlectual Southern Highlanders, let us express our thoughts, observations and visions using this forum. You might never know how important that piece of advice, critique or idea is. It takes an idea and a man to execute and with enough followers, Southern Highlands Political landscape can never be the same. Over to you sons and daughters of Souths.
