WESTERN BOEING 727200

Hasegawa 1/200

The Boeing 727200 became the standard for shorttomedium routes the world over in the early 1970's, following its introduction in 1967. Studies leading to the 727100 the dash 200's shorterfuselage predecessor had begun in 1956, and the 100 entered service in 1964. The 727200 became one of the most common sites at airports all over the world, and the type remained in production, in one variant or another, until 1984, by which time 1831 aircraft had been sold. In late 1994, nearly a thousand were still in service.

Good kits of this classic and beautiful jetliner are in woefully short supply, but the diminutive Hasegawa 1/200 kit will be hard to surpass. It is a jewel, and we can only hope that the new 1/72 kit due in 1999 will approach its fidelity. The Western "Flying W" scheme was the immediate successor to the famous "Indian Head" scheme, and was introduced in the mid 1970's. The decals came from Flightpath. On this kit I experimented with using a flat finish, and I think the impression in the small scale is very effective. In very small scales it is difficult for highgloss finishes not to look toylike.
