Oldbro News

23rd December 2002

Christmas time will no doubt bring some new red walking socks and perhaps a new 'man alive' tartan shirt for many of us. None too soon to start thinking on next year's expedition. If you are keen on coming, email oldbro or contribute to the forum to let us know what you want from the 2003 expedish. I'm off now to roast some chestnuts on my Optimus 111 stove, I will think of you all as the roarer burner 'pops into life.

Peace and goodwill to all bros from oldbro!

Summer holiday time for most of us...but not to early to think about what you want from next years LD expedition. Where should we go, in 2001 we were bound for Great Langdale, should this be our venue - how about Borrowdale again, or do we stick with Nether Wasdale.

Some of the bros (Sheps (Mr and Mrs), CJ, Steve Mac. and the TJ Neales (Mr, Mrs, and kids) are off too Shropshire for a few days. Nev has been assesing groups in the LD and Tim and Hil (and family) have been sailing on the Broads.

11th March 2002

This year’s expedition will commence in a couple of weeks. The venue is Nether Wasdale. Lets hope that  a year of absence from the Lakes will have made our hearts grow fonder and lead to a bumper attendance.

My work on the website continues – haha – honest! I have done some more stuff but it’s not quite finished, like my canoe, the house, the van…

16th October 2001

Finally I get around to putting some more news up here. Most of us communicate via the Forum which is a more dynamic medium. Nev has just informed us of the sad death of Phil Holiday. I have not seen Phil for many years. I’m sure all the oldbros extend their condolences to his family.

Easter Expedition 2002. It’s time to start planning for next years expedition. We have to make up for this year’s cancellation. The venue will be Nether Wasdale.

29th March 2001

It’s a pretty depressing time for the oldbros at present. A couple of weeks ago I was hoping that the F & M epidemic would fade out and that we would be able to carry on this year’s expedition. This was a forlorn hope. There is every chance that the decease will spread over the high fells and even into Wasdale.

We cannot go through this year without an expedition to the LD, late spring or more likely the Autumn. Lets get talking about it. There are now links on the ‘Links’ link to Trev’s oldbro corner photo site where you can post your pics and also one to the 8th Worthing site.

2001 Expedition – It would be nice to know who is coming? Please email me, or put a message on the FORUM.

Here are Nev’s thoughts….                                  LAKES, EASTER 2001.

My humble and selfish opinion is that I prefer to keep going back to Nether

Wasdale as it has so many advantages, which I don't need to list yet again.

I do appreciate that I am able to visit other sectors of the Lake District

when I am assessing DofE Expeditions, but that the majority of other Bros go

to The Lakes only at Easter, and therefore welcome a change now and again.

For what it's worth here are some pros and cons about the Great Langdale NT

Campsite, made as objectively as possible:

FOR:

1. About an hour closer than Nether Wasdale.

2. Well situated for walking out of the campsite to (a) Langdale Pikes,

    (b) Bowfell & Crinkle Crags (+ Pike of Blisco for "big achievers"),

    (c) walks on the lower fells NE towards Grasmere, SE to Side Pike and

Lingmoor Fell,

    (d) Scafell Pike is a long slog out and back via Rossett Gill, Angle

Tarn and Esk Hause with little scope for variation.

3. Traffic permitting, the following mountain areas lie less than an hour's

drive away: (a) Coniston Old Man, (b) Helvellyn, (c) Blencathra.

AGAINST:

1. At Easter ease of accessibility causes major traffic problems, crowding

on the campsite and at its facilities, and serious overcrowding in the pubs.

2. After prolonged heavy rain, or "melt-down of the white stuff", up to 80%

of the campsite can become flooded - including all of the area set aside for

groups, which is adjacent to the beck.

3. The area designated for camper-vans is right at the opposite end of the

campsite to that set aside for groups under canvas, about 400m away.

4. Pubs shut punctually.

(If you would like to transfer this part of this e-mail onto the Website, I

would have no objection.)”

Well we all love Wasdale but we voted last year and it was for Langdale. I’m looking forward to it, At least there is a chance the pub won’t run out of beer. My own feeling is that the LD, is probably less busy than it was 15 years ago. Wasdale certainly is. Maybe that’s just because they are all in Langdale. I think they are all in Portugal!

The first set of Trident stuff is now on the site, there is more to come as I pull Nev’s pictures and notes together. There will also be some other bits and pieces that Nev has found.

15th November 2000

2001 Expedition – It is time we all started thinking about our next expedition. After the endless soul destroying yearly discussion about where we should go. We decided that we should go to Great Langdale National Trust campsite. This site will allow us to book if we have more than 20 people and apparently allows small campervans. The reference in the Camping Club guide says that all vehicles have to stay in the car park. It doesn’t say that dogs are not allowed – but I’ll call them. If campers are not a good idea and sufficient bros are coming from Worthing, how about hiring a van? Retro cool or what!

We need to start getting the word around. I can email all the oldbros that I have email addresses for. There are other bros who are not knowingly webwise – we need to get to them. Please give it some thought. With a good pre-expedition launch I reckon we can improve on last years tally.

This year can we have a group photo before everybody leaves? This was one of Jem’s very good ideas, so I thought I’d pass it on.
